What Is USP

In Pharmaceutical Industries USP mean United States Pharmacopoeias

Pharmacopoeias

Derived from the Greek word "Pharmakon" means drug and "Poiea" means to do or to Make.

·       It is a legal and official book published by recognized authorities usually appointed by the government of each country.

·       Contains a list of pharmaceutical substances, formulas as well its description and standards.

United States Pharmacopoeia(USP) What is USP?

·       The first edition of the United States Pharmacopoeia was published on December 1820 in Latin and English.

·       From 1820 to 1942 it was published every ten years.

·       It was published every five years from 1942 to 2000.

·       It has been published annually since 2002.

·       The first American national form appeared in 1888.

·       USP21-NF16 contains eight supplements.

·       It was first published in January 1985 and last in November 1988.

·        USP22-NF17, 1990 is the third revision, the USP and consolidated NF in one band. The electronic version of USP-NF on diskettes was introduced 1992.

·       USP23-NF18, published in Mumbai in the Asian edition in the Late 1994. 

·       USP23 has ten supplements.

·       The first supplement was published in January 1995 and the last in May 1999.

·       USP24-NF19, released January 1, 2000.

·       USP30-NF25, released May 2007.

·       Contains scientific standards for pharmaceuticals, dietetic substances, Products and excipients in pharmaceutical forms.

·       Contains 4,100 monographs and 200 general chapters.

·       It was printed in three volumes.

·       Volume I contains general chapters and volumes II and III Monographs.

·       First amendment to USP30-NF25 published August 2007 and second

·       The Spanish edition of USP has also been published since 2006.
